Let's get one thing straight - healthy never came easy to me. Since a very young age, food was always the one constant; a feel good source that I could count on. I often used food as an emotional crutch and would find myself overeating as a source of comfort. As the overeating increased, so did my immense feelings of guilt and shame. My weight fluctuated constantly and I started associating the number on the scale (and the reflection in the mirror) directly to my self worth. This cycle continued for years - I teetered through periods of very low weights and very high weights, all depending on the health of my emotional state. In my twenties, I went through a series of life events that significantly impacted my health and well-being. I experienced major relationship changes, mental health struggles, job changes, financial hardship, and quite frankly, a complete loss of my identity. To cope with my emotions, I used food as a soothing mechanism and ended up gaining over 30 pounds as a result. I also had developed ovarian cysts, anxiety, depression & severe asthma as a result of my health & the stress. I tried almost every diet, supplement and fad weight-loss trend to get the weight off but ultimately failed every time.
On a milestone birthday, I woke up feeling extremely discouraged & frustrated. I never dreamed that I would be so unhappy at such a pivotal point in my life. I was at my highest weight, my confidence was at an all time low and I felt completely out of control. That night as I blew out the candles on my birthday cake, I made a commitment to myself that I would spend the entire year and better myself. I would regain control and take my life back. That night, I said "goodbye" to my excuses (and the junk food) and got serious about putting myself first.
Once I made the commitment to myself, I was unstoppable. I took the first step and started implementing small changes, remaining patient as these changes became sustainable. I researched nutrition and became absolutely fascinated by the science behind the correlation between food and disease (or dis-ease, as disease is literally a disruption in the body). I also discovered the power of holistic healing & the power we all possess to heal from within. I started to invite balance into other areas of my life...areas that had been neglected for years. This newfound balance completely re-installed hope and renewed my energy.
I successfully lost 45 pounds and here's what else I discovered:
My clothes fit again & I felt more confident in my body.
My love for cooking & baking ignited (health begins in the kitchen!)
My nutrition & food choices drastically improved.
My sugar cravings subsided.
My skin, hair, nails, muscle mass + body composition improved.
My body inflammation decreased.
My asthma improved dramatically.
My anxiety & depression became more manageable & I was able to get off medication.
My ovarian cysts disappeared completely.
My relationships strengthened (including the one with myself).
My mindset shifted & my daily actions started to align with my goals.
My manifesting power strengthened.
My energy levels increased. On this flip side, my sleep was restful & deep.
My relationship with food begun to heal. I no longer had guilt & shame around my food choices.
My daily joy that I experienced increased tenfold. I started to worry less & enjoy more!
Notice how my physical fat & weight loss wasn't the only positive result I achieved? This is not a coincidence.
Along with my significant physical results, I couldn't ignore the feelings of renewed energy, self-love and inner peace. These euphoric feelings were radiating through every inch of my body and it was unlike any feeling I had felt before. I realized that in addition to the physical results of my clean eating, literally every aspect of my life had improved dramatically. I had finally started to create a life that I wasn't looking to constantly escape from. My personal relationships strengthened, my career soared, my finances improved and life became more joyful. It was truly an "aha" moment - health is more than just the food we consume. Health is truly about achieving healthy balance in all areas of your life: relationships, finances, career, spirituality, home, creativity, joy, etc. Once I found this piece of the puzzle, it became very evident that we are absolutely capable of achieving optimal health and healing our bodies on our own - all through clean nutrition & overall lifestyle balance! We truly deserve to feel empowered, aligned, healthy, energetic and fulfilled every single day.
